Ways to Pay

Tap your Clipper card or contactless bank card every time you board. You do not need to tap when you disembark.

Paying with Clipper

VTA accepts the following on a Clipper card:

  • Cash value: For single rides on local or express bus routes or on light rail. You need a cash value balance of at least $2.50 on an adult Clipper card, $1.25 for Clipper START and Youth, or $1.00 on a Senior or Clipper Access card to board if you are paying with cash value.
  • VTA Standard Monthly Pass: Unlimited rides for one calendar month for adults, youth, senior, Clipper START and Clipper access riders on local bus routes and light rail. Available for sale on the 16th of the prior month through the 15th of the month. Rides on Express buses require an upgrade fee of $2.50 using cash value loaded on the Clipper card.
  • VTA Adult Express Monthly Pass: Unlimited rides on local and express buses and light rail for one calendar month. Available for sale on the 16th of the prior month through the 15th of the month.
  • Caltrain Monthly Pass: Unlimited rides for one calendar month for adults on local buses and light rail and for youth, senior and disabled riders on any route. Caltrain monthly passes are available for sale from the 21st of the prior month through the 15th of the month. Rides on Express buses require an upgrade fee of $2.50 using cash value loaded on the Clipper card. After you spend the daily maximum ($7.50 for adults, $2.75 for Clipper START and Youth, $3.00 for seniors and Clipper Access riders) on standard rides, all rides on those services are free for the rest of the day.

Ride More, Save More with Maximums

After you spend the daily maximum ($15.00 for adults and $7.50 for Clipper START on express rides), all rides on those services are free for the rest of the day.

Within the two-hour transfer window, adult riders who have earned a standard day pass and transfer to an express bus route will be charged an upgrade fee. Outside the two-hour window, adult riders will be charged the full express fare.

Upgrades: Adult and Clipper START riders with a monthly pass and/or a Caltrain monthly pass customers can use cash value on Clipper to upgrade to an express bus.

Transferring with Clipper

Clipper knows when to give you free and discounted rides when you transfer.

VTA VTA: Discounted ride within 2 hours of boarding first Vine bus.

Any transfer to VTA from the transit agencies listed below (within 2 hours of boarding first agency) will result in a discount of $2.85 off your total adult trip price.

If you have a Youth, Senior, Clipper Access or Clipper START card, you’ll receive the proportional discount when transferring to VTA.
