Ways to Pay

Tap your Clipper card or contactless bank card evey time you board. Learn why you need to tap even if you have a pass.

Note: On cable cars, the conductor will use a handheld card reader to tap your card.

Paying with Clipper

Muni accepts the following on a Clipper card:

  • Cash value: Valid for unlimited travel for 120 minutes on regular Muni service (excluding cable car). Clipper customers get discounts of 15 cents for adults and 10 cents for seniors and people with disabilities.

  • One-Day Muni-Only Pass: Unlimited rides on all Muni service excluding cable car.

  • Muni Monthly Passes (Adults, Seniors, Clipper Access and Lifeline): Unlimited rides on all Muni vehicles, including cable cars, for one calendar month. Available for sale from the 17th of the prior month through the 16th of the month.

  • Monthly Adult Fast Pass + BART within San Francisco: Unlimited rides on all Muni vehicles, including cable cars, and on BART within San Francisco (trips outside of these stations are charged full fare). Available for sale from the 17th of the prior month through the 16th of the month.

  • 1-, 3- and 7-day Visitor passes: Unlimited rides on all Muni vehicles (including cable cars) for the specified time period.

  • 1-day California Cable Car pass: Unlimited rides on the California Cable Car. Excludes Muni Standard services.

  • Free Muni for all Youth: All youth 18 years and younger can ride Muni service for free, with the exception of cable cars. No Clipper card is required. San Francisco youth who require access to a cable car for regular travel can contact the SFMTA to request a pass.

Transferring with Clipper

Clipper knows when to give you free and discounted rides when you transfer.

Note: Transfers do not include discounts on cable cars.

Any transfer to Muni from the transit agencies listed below (within 2 hours of boarding first agency) will result in a free fare. You still need to tap your card when boarding a Muni bus to receive the transfer discount.
