You can use monthly passes or cash value on a Clipper card. For a complete list of fares, visit VTA.

Monthly Passes

Monthly passes are only available on Clipper and are valid for the calendar month purchased.

Monthly passes are available for purchase starting on the 16th day of the previous month through the 15th of the pass month (for example, you can purchase a July pass from June 16 through July 15). Monthly passes purchased on or after the 16th of the month are valid for the following month only.

  • Standard Monthly Pass—valid for adult riders on regular routes and for youth, senior and disabled customers on all regular and express routes
  • Express Monthly Pass—valid for adult riders on all regular and express routes

Adult riders with a Standard Monthly Pass can upgrade on an express route by paying the fare difference with cash value on their Clipper cards. You cannot pay fare upgrades to the driver. If you do not have enough cash value on your Clipper card to pay the upgrade fee, you will be required to pay the entire cost of the ride with cash.

Day Passes (Standard and Express)

You can only get a day pass with Clipper. VTA offers a Standard Day Pass for all riders and an Express Day Pass for adult riders only. Clipper automatically grants you a pass once you have paid the same amount in cash value as the cost of the pass. Once you've earned a day pass, your rides for the rest of that day will be free of charge.

If you have earned an adult Standard Day Pass and transfer to an express route, Clipper will deduct the full express fare from your Clipper cash value balance until you've paid the same amount as an Express Day Pass.

Transfers

Clipper calculates free or discounted transfers from AC Transit, BART and SamTrans. VTA also accepts monthly Caltrain passes valid for two or more zones (one or more zones for senior and disabled customers) for fare payment.

Just tag your Clipper card each time you board—unless you are riding light rail and transfer within 2 hours of your first tag. Customers riding VTA light rail are allowed up to 2 hours to complete their trip. The 2-hour period begins once your card is tagged to a reader at a light-rail station. Do not tag your card again within this 2-hour period, or you will be charged another fare. Your trip must be completed within this 2-hour window.

Clipper does not offer transfer discounts between VTA and ACE, Capitol Corridor, Highway 17 or Monterey/Salinas Transit. Visit VTA for details on available transfers.
