Preview Service* All rides are free.
Opening Day* through September 4 Adult fares and 31-day passes are half off. Customers with Youth, Senior or RTC (Disabled) Clipper card receive regular discounts on fares and passes.
Everyone needs to use a Clipper card to tag on before boarding and tag off before leaving the platform, and you’ll need to have cash value or a 31-day pass on your card.

*Visit for details on dates and schedules for Preview Service and Opening Day.

Starting September 5, adult riders pay regular full fares, while youth, seniors and disabled riders with discount Clipper cards pay regular discount fares. Don’t forget to tag on and tag off!

Be prepared to ride SMART by purchasing an adult Clipper card or applying for a Youth, Senior or RTC Clipper card ahead of time. Learn about how to get an adult card, apply for a discount (Youth, Senior or RTC) card, and add value to your card.

Using Clipper on SMART

You can use Clipper to pay for rides on SMART by adding cash value or a 31-day pass to your card. See the Fares and passes page for more information.

You must have a minimum balance of $3.50 on an adult card or $1.75 on a Youth, Senior or RTC Clipper card if you are paying with cash value. No minimum is required if you are using a 31-day pass.

Tag Your Card

  • Find the Clipper card reader on the SMART platform.
  • Hold your card flat against the Clipper logo on the reader.
  • Wait for the beep and green light.

If the balance on your card is $2 or less after the maximum fare is deducted, the reader will beep twice, and display a yellow light and a “low balance” message. You can board the train, but be sure to tag off at your destination and add value to your card. The reader will beep three times and display a red light if you have not paid a valid fare, and you will not be able to board with your Clipper card.

Tag Off

When you reach your destination, tag off by repeating the steps above.

You must tag off within 4 hours, or you will be charged the maximum one-way fare from your starting point.
