Some SamTrans fares are changing on January 1!

  • Out of San Francisco fares and passes are being eliminated.
  • New Express fares and Adult Monthly Passes are being introduced.
  • The price of Local single-ride fares and Local Monthly Passes is remaining the same.
  • Clipper customers save on single-ride fares and transfers!
    • Adult customers save 20 cents on the Local fare and 50 cents on the Express fare.
    • Youth and Eligible Discount customers save 10 cents on the Local fare and 25 cents on the Express fare.
    • Clipper customers get free or discounted transfers within two hours of paying their first SamTrans fare. (Be sure to tag your card each time you board!)

Using Clipper on SamTrans

You can use Clipper on all SamTrans routes.

Clipper automatically figures out the cost of your ride, including all discounts and transfers. See Fares and passes for more information on the types of value available.

To use Clipper on SamTrans, locate the Clipper card reader on the bus. Tag your card by holding it flat against the Clipper logo on the reader, and wait for the beep and green light. The card reader either will verify that you have a valid pass and display the expiration date or will deduct the cash value fare and show your remaining balance.

If your card balance is low, the reader will beep twice and display a yellow light. You can still board the bus, but you will need to add value to your card before your next trip. If you do not have enough value on your card, the reader will beep three times and display a red light, and you will not be able to pay your fare with Clipper.
