You can use a Monthly Pass or cash value on a Clipper card. Passengers with a Youth, Senior or RTC Clipper card are eligible for discounted fares. On Caltrain, using cash value on your Clipper card instead of a one-way paper ticket saves you money. For a complete list of fares, visit Caltrain.

Minimum Balance

You must always have $1.25 in cash value on your card, even if you are using a Monthly Pass to pay your fare.

Monthly Pass

The Monthly Pass gives you unlimited rides on Caltrain within the zones specified. Monthly passes can be purchased on the 21st of each month for the coming month through the 15th day of the valid month. Discounted monthly passes are available for youth, seniors and disabled riders.

Zone Upgrades

If you want to travel outside the zones of your Monthly Pass, you must purchase a Zone Upgrade ticket from the Caltrain ticket machine or through Caltrain Mobile. The upgrade and your Clipper card are your proof of payment. Do not tag on and off outside the zones covered by your Monthly Pass, or Clipper will deduct the entire cost of your one-way trip from your cash balance.


Clipper automatically calculates transfer discounts when you transfer to AC Transit Route M or the Dumbarton Express within 120 minutes of tagging off Caltrain.

You can receive a discount on the Muni adult fare when you transfer from Caltrain to Muni buses, light-rail vehicles or historic streetcars within 60 minutes using cash value or a Monthly Pass with a Zone 1 origin or destination. You must tag on and off Caltrain - even if you have a monthly pass - to receive the discount.

VTA and SamTrans accept monthly Caltrain passes valid for two or more zones (one or more zones for senior and disabled customers) for fare payment. Adults with a monthly pass must pay a fare upgrade on VTA Express routes with cash value on their Clipper card (no fee for youth and senior/disabled passengers).

Parking Permits

Customers who load a Monthly Pass on their Clipper card can purchase a monthly parking permit from any Caltrain ticket machine two business days after purchasing their pass or ticket. For more information on obtaining and using a monthly parking permit, visit Caltrain.
